Students will be provided with pre made greenware tiles to experiment on, and will have the opportunity to try out each technique after it is demonstrated.

The first session will focus on carving. slip trailing, sprigging and sgraffito, and the second session will introduce inlay, slip transfer techniques, applying surface techniques to 3D forms, and an opportunity for students to integrate techniques and build up a layered surface look. Community Class: Exploring the Ceramic Surface

Thursdays, 6 Weeks, February 28, 2019 - April 11, 2019, 5:30-8pm

Classes will be held at the Floyd Center for the Arts in Floyd, VA. http://floydartcenter.org/

Explore a variety of ceramic surface decoration techniques and how to integrate them into a personally expressive, layered surface on your work. Techniques introduced will include inlay, sgraffito, slip transfer, slip trailing, carving, sprigging, and glazing. We will utilize colored slips and ceramic underglazes, and experiment with which materials work best for each technique.

Students will be provided with pre made greenware tiles to experiment on during the first session, and can choose to work on the wheel or handbuild to construct forms for future surface experimentation in the following 5 sessions. The first three sessions will introduce carving, slip trailing, sprigging, sgraffito, inlay, and slip transfer techniques on greenware. The last three sessions will focus on applying surface
techniques to bisque ware, glazing, and building up a layered, personally expressive surface. Students will have the opportunity to participate in at least 1 glaze firing, and leave the class with finished pieces.

The first half of each session will be used for demonstration, and the second half will be dedicated to individual work time, during which I will spend time one on one with students, troubleshooting technique and helping them develop their personal expression. While this class will focus on surface techniques, if students have specific questions about throwing or handbuilding, I will be happy to work with them during one on one time.

To register, or if you have any questions, please call or email the Floyd Center for the Arts at 540-745-2784 or education@floydartcenter.org

Are you in love with the wheel, but having trouble pushing yourself beyond the basics? Are you looking to expand your technical abilities and your critical eye, to develop strong, resolved forms? This class will build on basic wheel throwing skills and introduce students to more complex shapes and composite forms through drawing exercises, demonstrations, and one on one instruction. We will explore how to take basic forms to another level, as well as how to design and construct more complex forms. Students can sign up for 4, 6, or 8 weeks. Classes will always start with demonstration, and at least half of the class time will be dedicated to open work time and one on one instruction. The first 4 sessions we will focus on one formal element each week:

Session 1- How to break free of the cylinder-- throwing complex shapes.

Session 2- Handles for every form.

Session 3- Lids and Galleries.

Session 4- Spouts and Pouring Vessels.

We will have at least 1 glaze firing at the end of the first 4 sessions. The second 4 sessions will be focused on developing a critical eye and applying the technical skills from the first 4 sessions to
construct balanced, resolved forms. We will spend time critically reflecting on the pieces made during the first four sessions, and choosing at least one form to make again and improve upon. Formal demonstrations will continue in the second 4 sessions, but will be customized to student interest and requests. Students taking 6 or 8 sessions will have the opportunity to fire at least once more, and more frequently depending on the quantity of work made. Basic wheel throwing experience required.

Please contact me or the Floyd Center for the Arts if you have any questions!
